So the official PlayStation Plus Monthly Games for October 2026 Announced yesterday. And I noticed something weird right away. You look at the calendar and see October, and naturally, you expect horror games. Everybody wants to get scared during Halloween month. But when you look at the playstation plus free games october 2026, there is a total lack of actual scares.
It is kinda baffling to me. Because Sony usually leans hard into the spooky season.
Not this time though. We got a very strange mix of games that feel completely disconnected from the time of year. I am going to break down exactly what we are getting. And honestly, depending on what kind of gamer you are, this month is either a massive win or a total waste of your hard drive space.
Let us talk about the headliner. PlayStation Plus Monthly Games for October: F1 25 is front and center. I get it. Formula 1 is a massive sport right now, and the game itself is highly rated if you like racing simulators. But putting a highly technical racing simulator as the big October game feels like a very weird flex from Sony.
Here is the truth. The game runs beautifully on the PS5. The dualsense controller feedback when you hit the rumble strips on the track is fantastic. You can literally feel the grip slipping from your rear tires when it starts raining.
Just do not expect any jump scares on the track. Unless you count blowing a tire going 200 miles an hour as horror.
F1 25 is huge in terms of file size. You are going to need to clear out some SSD space before you even think about hitting the download button. The career mode is deep. Almost too deep if you just want to jump in and play an arcade racer. You have to manage car parts, deal with contract negotiations, and figure out complicated pit strategies.
If you are into that hardcore management stuff, it is a goldmine. If you just want to drive fast, you might get bored after thirty minutes. The graphics are incredibly sharp though. Racing in a heavy downpour looks terrifyingly real. So maybe that is the horror element Sony was going for? Driving a multi-million dollar car in a heavy rainstorm with absolutely zero visibility.
I really need to talk about the secondary titles because this is where the lineup gets even more confusing.
You get Hunt: Showdown 1896. This one is tense. Really, really tense. You are wading through deep swamps in the late 1800s and listening for enemy footsteps. I guess it has literal monsters in it, so maybe that is Sony trying to give us a Halloween vibe?
But it is mostly a competitive multiplayer shooter. It is a fantastic game, do not get me wrong. I actually spent a lot of time with it before it hit the subscription service. It just proves the point that PlayStation’s Free PS Plus Games For October Aren’t Really Scary At All.
Hunt is a game that severely punishes mistakes. You go into a map, track a bounty, kill a disgusting boss monster, and then try to extract before other human players steal your hard work. The audio design is some of the best in gaming right now. You can hear a dry twig snap from two compounds over. Because sound is so incredibly important, playing this without a good headset is a massive mistake. You will just get shot from the bushes over and over again.
It is highly stressful. But it is not a traditional horror game. You are the hunter, not the helpless victim running from a slasher.
Then we have Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2. I honestly do not know what to say about this one.
You are literally shooting giant blocky bugs. It is goofy, loud, and completely ridiculous. Maybe it acts as a good palate cleanser after losing three highly stressful matches in a row in Hunt. The sheer chaos of Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2 is fun for about an hour. It is voxel-based, which means everything looks like it is made of cheap plastic blocks.
You run around blowing up giant ants and spiders. And sure, if you have a massive phobia of insects, maybe it counts as a horror game for you. For the rest of us, it is just mindless shooting. Which is fine. Sometimes you just want to turn your brain off and hold the right trigger down. The framerate holds up surprisingly well considering how many blocky enemies they throw on the screen at once.
A lot of people are getting tired of the monthly subscription model. You pay your yearly fee and just sit back and hope the months balance out.
Last month was pretty good. This month? It feels like a very mixed bag. The value is definitely there if you look at the raw retail price of these games. F1 25 alone costs a big chunk of change if you buy it physical. But value is totally subjective.
If you do not care about track racing or hardcore extraction shooters, this month is a total dud for you. I will probably mess around with the racing for a weekend and delete it. Hunt will stay on my hard drive though.
Wrapping up the playstation plus free games october 2026, I suggest you claim them to your library anyway. You never know when you might suddenly get the urge to drive a Formula 1 car or shoot a blocky spider. Just do not go in expecting a proper Halloween scare.
When can I download the October 2026 PS Plus games?
You can add them to your library and start downloading on the first Tuesday of the month. They usually go live around midday depending on your time zone.
Do I keep these free games forever?
You keep access to them as long as you maintain an active PlayStation Plus subscription. If your subscription expires, the games lock until you resubscribe.
Are these specific games playable on the older PS4?
Yes, all three of these titles have versions that work on the PS4. Just be aware that F1 25 and Hunt perform noticeably worse on the older hardware compared to the PS5.
